commUNITY Project

Now more than ever, families and children are relying on Food Banks. When the pandemic hit, David (my brother) and I started collecting food for local pantries. One year later Can You Help Too came to life. Since 2012, my family and I have been volunteering for The Community Dinners (click here). They are providing a free relaxing evening of dinner and dancing for families in need in our community. They take place 4 times a year. When the pandemic hit, the Community Dinners got cancelled. My brother and I ended up dropping off food at a local pantry, and we noticed the shelves were almost empty. This is when David and I decided to collect and deliver food each month. First our family helped, then our friends, then our neighbors. So we decided to make it official and start Can You Help Too. It became a commUNITY project. Residents scheduled "contactless" or "front porch" pick-ups in 2020 and 2021. Once David went to college, I lost my driver. I decided to place a collecting bin on my driveway, so people from the community could easily drop off donations. Then I approached local businesses to find out if they wanted to host one of my bins. Our bins are now all around town. We offer the option to host our bins permanently or for a shorter period of time. Permanent locations get their very own webpage (click here). As a thank you, we advertise about our pop-up or permanent locations anytime someone drop off donations, and in May, we highlight businesses each Monday for two months. Our goal is to have enough locations, so we can do "Business Monday Highlights" each week all year round. We support people in need in our community, but we also support local businesses. We now have 5 permanent locations and 5 pop-locations. Friends have now joined our team so we can expend (click here). People from the community can also borrow bins to run their own food drive and children make drawings we use as flyers to advertise our commUNITY project.

The PRC Story
There is nothing as rewarding and challenging as becoming a new parent. You experience unconditional love, and the unending battle for a better night’s sleep. You join the ranks of parenthood, yet may feel lonely and confused. As infants mature to toddlerhood, you look for new ways to bond with them and support their growth. The PRC story began with a simple belief: you don’t have to do it alone.Celebrating more than 4 decades in Port Washington, The Parent Resource Center (“PRC”) has been an integral part of the community, bringing together families with young children to play, learn, grow, and make life-long friendships. We are the place where children and their caregivers make their first connections.Founded by Lynne Patterson in 1980, the PRC was originally housed in one room of the old Flower Hill School on Campus Drive. Today, the PRC has grown to over 400 members and provides parenting workshops, social events, recreational outings, summer enrichment programs, and a myriad of developmental classes geared toward infants and toddlers. Since the beginning, a core commitment of the PRC has been supporting economically disadvantaged families. Our Outreach program helps many local families gain access to early childhood educational opportunities through our “Stepping Stones” preschool readiness classes, ESL classes, summer enrichment program and scholarships to PRC programs. With professionally-led classes and a loving staff, The Parent Resource Center of Port Washington has become one of the premiere early childhood learning centers in our region. We strive to create an environment that is welcoming, safe and inclusive and hope that you’ll join us at an upcoming class or future event.
